The challenge
A contract shuttle operator in Tennessee won a major piece of business with one significant catch: the contract started in roughly sixty days, and service could not begin without a fleet of more than thirty buses delivered, inspected, and route-ready before the start date. In an industry where factory lead times for a single specified shuttle bus are commonly measured in months, a thirty-plus-unit fleet in under two months is the kind of request that gets polite refusals from most distributors.
There was a second, subtler requirement. On the operator's previous contract, passengers had occasionally been bumped and scraped on the interior luggage racks, and the rear section of the racks had a habit of damaging the luggage itself. The operator wanted both problems engineered out of the new fleet, without an exotic custom interior driving up the per-unit price.
The TESCO solution
Speed first. TESCO worked directly with the manufacturer, Forest River, to secure the buses ahead of the contract start: built and delivered ahead of day one, not merely close to it. TESCO's delivery team staged pre-delivery inspections so that units arrived ready for graphics and registration rather than stacking up in a service queue.
The luggage-rack issue got the engineering treatment. TESCO's engineers designed a low-cost padding solution for the rack edges that had been catching passengers and bags, in a material chosen to last nearly the lifetime of the vehicle without needing replacement, which matters on a fleet of thirty-plus units where any consumable part multiplies into a recurring maintenance line item.
The result
The operator started its contract on time, with its full fleet on the ground and a luggage rack that no longer sent passengers to the first-aid kit or luggage to the repair shop. The padding solution was low-cost and added no meaningful maintenance burden.
Fleet buyers tend to remember two things about a distributor: whether the buses showed up when promised, and whether anyone actually listened to the operational details. This project delivered on both, and it shows what is possible when a distributor works the manufacturer relationship on the customer's behalf instead of simply forwarding a purchase order and hoping.
