Capacity
8–25 passengers + wheelchair positions
Wheelchair access
Lift, or ramp on low-floor
CDL
Not required at 14 passengers
Boarding
Low step; kneeling on low-floor
Typical chassis
Ford Transit, Ford E-350/E-450, RAM ProMaster

A hospital shuttle rarely goes far, but it never stops: the remote-lot loop for staff at shift change, the garage-to-entrance run for patients and visitors, the transfer between the main campus and an outpatient center across town. Every vehicle on that duty needs a wheelchair position, an easy step and enough seats to clear a shift change without a second trip.

Health systems come to TESCO for a mix of lift-equipped Ford Transit vans, non-CDL cutaway shuttles for the parking loop, and low-floor buses where the lift cycle would slow the route. Graphics matched to the system's brand are standard on most orders.

Buyer's guide

What to spec

The decisions that matter for hospital shuttle buses, the ones a rep will walk through with you before the build sheet.

Loop duty

A shuttle on a ten-minute loop makes more stops in a day than a school bus does in a week. Spec doors, steps and the lift for cycle count, not for distance.

Shift-change capacity

The parking loop's peak is fifteen minutes at 7 a.m. Size the bus for that peak; a 14-passenger non-CDL unit running two loops usually beats a larger bus that needs a licensed driver.

Wheelchair every time

Every hospital shuttle should carry at least one wheelchair position with a lift or ramp. The passenger who needs it is the one the hospital exists for.

Infection control

Non-porous seating, hard flooring and wipeable surfaces make between-trip cleaning realistic. Nanocide-treated seat fabric is a common request.

Branding and wayfinding

Route names and system branding on the bus reduce the 'is this my shuttle?' question at the curb. TESCO's graphics team produces the wrap.

Idle and climate

Waiting at the entrance in January and July means long idles; spec heating and air conditioning for it and consider auxiliary heat.

Questions

Questions we get about hospital shuttle buses

Do we need a CDL driver for a hospital shuttle?

Not if the bus is configured for 14 passengers or fewer plus the driver. Health systems that need more seats per trip either run two non-CDL buses or hire licensed drivers for a 20-plus-passenger unit.

Can the shuttle carry stretchers or only wheelchairs?

Shuttle buses and vans are built for wheelchair securement, not stretchers. For stretcher transport you'd look at an ambulette-class van built to that purpose. TESCO's emergency vehicle affiliate handles those builds.

How do you handle branding?

TESCO's in-house graphics team designs and applies wraps and lettering to your brand standards before delivery, so the bus arrives ready for the loop.

What about electric shuttles for a campus loop?

A short fixed loop with a home base is the ideal electric duty cycle. TESCO offers electric full-size vans and minibuses; see the Electric brand page for current models.

Spec it with someone who's built it before

Tell a TESCO rep what your routes look like and they'll come back with a build sheet, a delivery date and a price, whether you buy new, buy pre-owned or lease.
